This same process is impaired by the impairment of glucose homeostasis in many skeletal muscles of old adults (7). Some studies have shown that bodybuilders can improve their BMD by taking estrogens. It is the estrogen produced by the liver that is most effective in stimulating bone formation, and estrogens may therefore help increase BMD and strength in older men and women (6). Several studies have shown that increasing exercise intensity during the week of menstruation also improves both strength and BMD in women aged 80 and older (8). Estrogen therapy may have value in treating muscle loss, and its use can be beneficial in older women with chronic kidney disease (9). Many older women have also reported improved function and health in response to estrogen therapy (10). Although more research needs to be done, several studies show that the effects of taking estrogen in older women may even be greater than in younger women. Among women with osteoporosis, those taking estrogen therapy had a 30% greater increase in muscle strength than those in the placebo group (11).
